Creating Short Stories

Practices: writing, speaking, creativity, collaboration

Get the students to work on a short story. You can set the theme, give them a prompt or first line, or let them have free reign.

After they have finished tell them that they now have to read their story to the rest of the class and mime it out as they read. You might do a short demonstration when you introduce this activity to a class for the first time.

Variations:

Have the students work in pairs or groups.

Have the students vote on favorite stories and then discuss specifically what they liked about the story/stories.

Prompt suggestions:

  1. The day my friend Burt the Bear and I left to go camping _____________
  2. The story must include a talking rabbit, a pair of yellow dancing shoes and an enormous tree.
  3. Write a scene where a zebra talks a lion out of eating her.
