Animal Vocabulary

 

dog        cat         horse     snake     deer       seal        bear       tiger       hamster     rabbit     dolphin

mouse   cow       duck       fox         wolf       fish         frog       turtle     lizard

 

PART 1: Pick and teach 10 of the above words using pictures or illustrations. Have the students read/repeat and point to the provided pictures as a group and calling on individuals.

PART 2: Have each student pick their favorite type animal from the list and draw a picture of it (give 5-10 minutes for this). Go around the room and have them hold up the picture and saying the name of the animal.

(advanced – have them say why they chose that animal as their favorite, they can do this one at a time in front of the class or they can walk around the room giving their explanations to each other)

PART 3: Write the vocab words on the board at random. Split the room into two teams and give each team a marker or piece of chalk. Call out a vocab word and the first team to circle the word gets a point, rotating through the students. The team with the most points wins.

(advanced – instead of calling out the animal types you can say “pet”, “wild” or “farm” and have them circle an appropriate answer for points. Remember, some animals fall into more than one category.)
