What’s the Animal?

Type of Activities: listening and speaking

Procedure:
Form two teams.

Explain the game, with a few examples of descriptions in search of their animals. Ask, ‘What’s the animal?’, and get students to correctly say the corresponding animal for your answer. (Phrase it like Jeopardy).

Have two players–one from each team–come to the front. Style it like a game show if you like, with the students standing side-by-side. Next, read a description of an animal. The fastest player to respond wins a point for her/his team. New contestants come to the front for a new round.

Examples:

(1)The instructor says:

“These animals are large and grey. They have big ears and two tusks. They live and travel in large groups. They are found mainly in Africa and India.”

The first student to raise their hand says:

“What are elephants?”

(2)The instructor says:

“These animals are covered in white fur. They live at the North Pole. They hibernate during the cold winter. They eat meat.”

The first student to raise their hand says:

“What are polar bears?”

(3)The instructor says:

“These animals are small and covered in fur. They often live in people’s houses. They like to nap a lot. They play with string and hunt mice.”

The first student to raise their hand says:

“What are cats?”
